Nidec Releases High-Speed Communications Module for HVAC Drive Systems

Nidec’s Control Techniques has launched the SI-BACnet IP add-on module for new and existing HVAC drives to help communicate between devices and create a connected automated building.

Recently, Japan-based industrial control manufacturer Nidec announced the release of a new product designed to drive more building automation capability toward motor control systems: the SI-BACnet IP module. This optional add-on module gives high-speed ethernet-based communications to new and existing motor drives commonly used in the HVAC industry.

The optional module consists of two RJ45 Ethernet ports that are compatible with plug-and-play technology. The BACnet module is compatible with Nidec’s Commander C200, C300, and C300 PM along with the Pump Drive F600 and the HVAC H300 drive. These drives are typically used in HVAC applications where basic analog and digital signals are used to control the drives, and keypads are used to enter parameters. By installing the SI-BACnet module, technicians will be able to remotely control and monitor equipment through standard ethernet cables.
Common commands such as start, stop, and run are all possible over the BACnet protocol. Motor speed and torque values can also easily be transmitted in real-time through the protocol. Monitoring system variables in such a way allows technicians to tune PID gains, thus reducing integration time. Nidec also provides a PC commissioning tool to utilize all these features.

Building SCADA

With the BACnet protocol being ISO-supported, developers can create SCADA applications to interface with equipment utilizing BACnet technology. These applications can then be used by technicians as a resource when monitoring the building’s automation equipment.

BACnet Protocol

Just as automation devices have their protocol, building automation devices also have their particular protocol. The BACnet protocol is specifically designed for devices typically used in building automation to share information and read or write parameters from a single remote terminal. The protocol exists on a standard ethernet cable utilizing the industry standard RJ45 connector.
The BACnet protocol is commonly used in HVAC systems but has rapidly been adopted into fire suppression, security, and lighting control systems. Connecting all of these devices allows technicians and building maintenance personnel access to monitor or control all of the required systems within the building from one centralized location. With the ability to monitor system status, we can go even further and collect data on these systems for predictive maintenance or tracking energy consumption.

Building Efficiency

As buildings become larger and automation becomes more advanced, engineers are trying to find ways to reduce carbon footprints. A common method to reduce energy consumption is to monitor and assess where the greatest consumption lies. If electricity is your greatest consumption, turn off lights when rooms are unoccupied or allow the air temperature to fluctuate when rooms or building floors are inactive. These functions are only possible when the building is heavily automated and all of the devices can communicate with each other.
By installing devices like the SI-BACnet IP module in your HVAC and pump drives, control systems can react quickly to changing environments and help reduce energy consumption.
